Choose Your Favorite Sport

Sport is a physical activity based on systematic work, discipline, and rules, involving enjoyment, exertion, and competition. Sport aims to protect the mental and physical health of people and to bring them together. Sport promotes national and international peace, friendship, tolerance, and cooperation.

Regular exercise maintains the body's balance and makes a person more energetic. Exercise can help prevent heart disease, stress, and type 2 diabetes, and can improve bone and muscle health. On the other hand, the body pumps more blood during exercise. This ensures blood flow to the brain.

So, including physical activity in your life is important for both your physical and mental health. Choosing a sport you truly like from all the options can be hard sometimes, and choosing the wrong one can drain a person. The important thing is not giving up until you find the sport suitable for yourself, because one particular sport can make you hate having sport in your life, while another can make you get out of bed willing to do sport every day.

Let's take a look at a bunch of sports so you can at least have a head start by knowing what each sport includes. This way, you can make a preliminary comment about them and see which one is more suitable for you.

First, let's take a look at

VOLLEYBALL

Volleyball is played by two teams of six on a court that measures 18 by 9 meters. The goal is to score points by making the ball touch the ground on the other team’s side. Every time the ball is served, a point is up for grabs, no matter which team served. Play starts with a serve from behind the end line. Each team can hit the ball up to three times before sending it over the net. The typical sequence is a bump (using the forearms), a set (an overhead pass), and a spike (a strong hit downward). When a team wins a point on the other team’s serve, all players rotate one spot clockwise, making sure everyone plays both front and back row positions. The Libero, a defensive specialist, can replace anyone in the back row to help keep the ball in play.

The rules are designed to keep the game fair; players can’t touch the net, hold or throw the ball, or hit it twice in a row. Matches are usually best-of-five sets. The first four sets go to 25 points, and if there’s a fifth set, it’s played to 15. In every set, a team needs to win by at least two points.

Teams that play well stick to the classic bump-set-spike strategy and communicate constantly, keeping the ball off the floor on their side.

Next, let's take a look at

BASKETBALL

The first thing about this exciting and fast sport is that there are two teams consisting of five members who are playing against each other in a rectangular playing field. Players need to do their best to win the game, scoring by throwing the ball into a hoop placed high above the floor, ten feet above it. Each match starts with a jump ball held at center court. Teams are moving the ball around the playground by dribbling it or passing it. Points are scored for baskets made from within and outside the arc, 2 and 3 points, respectively. Free throws award 1 point per shot.

Defensive players are trying to intercept the ball, block their opponents’ shots, and take rebounds. However, many rules must be followed in basketball to ensure it goes smoothly and fairly. First of all, players are not allowed to dribble after picking up the ball twice; second, they have only three seconds to stand in the key area if they are on offense. Each NBA match consists of four periods, each lasting 12 minutes. College basketball matches are divided into two halves, each lasting 20 minutes. Overtime lasts five minutes if necessary.

A team must have individual skill sets, such as shooting and ball handling, and also good teamwork, either offensive teamwork using playsets like the pick-and-roll or defensive teamwork.

Next, let's take a look at

FOOTBALL

Football, otherwise known as soccer in some parts of the world, is one of the most popular team games played in a rectangular grass/turf field where two sides of eleven players each try to score by putting the ball into the other side's goal. It takes a maximum of ninety minutes of playing time, with the first half consisting of forty-five minutes, followed by a fifteen-minute rest, and then another forty-five minutes for the second half. In this sport, the key rule is that only the goalkeeper can use his/her hands in the penalty area, while all the other players are not allowed to use their hands to control the round-shaped ball. Hence, players can only kick, head, or chest the ball and score goals; the side with more goals wins. As a means of maintaining the integrity of the game, referees penalize fouls like tripping or pushing with free kicks or penalty kicks, and show a yellow card for warnings or a red card for disqualifications. Another interesting tactic involved in this game is offside, which is a rule prohibiting attackers from cherry picking or being ahead of two defenders, including the goalkeeper, during plays. Though there may be some variations in terms of professional league play compared to international matches regulated by FIFA, soccer is basically played using combinations of stamina, accurate passing, and tactical formations aimed at cracking an opponent’s defensive structure.

Lastly, let's take a look at

TENNIS

The game of tennis is an exacting sport that involves the use of a racket to hit a hollow rubber ball over a net that separates two players or teams on a rectangular-shaped field of grass, clay, or concrete court. Tennis may be played in singles form, involving a head-to-head competition between two players, or doubles, where there are two players per team. In tennis, a match is initiated by serving the ball diagonally into the opponent’s service box. Players then proceed to exchange shots with the ball without letting it touch the ground twice; this is referred to as the rally phase. Scoring in tennis starts at fifteen, followed by thirty, forty, and then the winner gets the point. However, when both players have forty each, termed deuce, the winning player should get two consecutive points. A tennis game requires that the players score six games while having a two-game difference from their opponent to win the set. The majority of tennis matches are organized in the best-of-three and five-set format. Although there are some differences between the ATP/WTA Tour and the Grand Slams, like Wimbledon, one thing that is common and not negotiable in either league is the strict prohibition of touching the net using the racquet or the body, as well as hitting the ball outside the court limits.

Of course, there are lots and lots of different sports other than these four, but when I think about sports, these are the first four that come to my mind. Which one of these four is your favourite? If you ask me, I would probably enjoy playing the three other than football/soccer; those three seem pretty fun to me. What about you? And don't forget, there are lots of other sports; if you don't like any of these, there is probably another sport waiting for you!
