How Does Blushing Work?

What is blushing?

The Oxford Dictionary defines blushing as to become pink in the face, usually from embarrassment. In other words; blushing is an uncontrollable experience of warmth, usually it is combined with reddening on the face, on the neck that people experience in reaction to real or perceived evaluation or social attention. Biologically, it is caused by vasodilation of cutaneous blood vessels in the blush region. The dilation of these vessels

causes an increase in blood volume in the affected areas, which can be visible with redness and extreme warmth in the area.Charles Darwin mentions blushing as “the most peculiar and the most human expression" in his book  The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals. It was often believed that dark skinned people do not blush; however, -such as Blacks and Indians- show the same physiological responses when it comes to blushing. It only depends on how light the individual's skin tone is.

Can It Be Controlled?

There are basic solutions for reducing blushing such as removing extra clothing and drinking water. Or, if you want to take precautions, you can use skincare products that reduce redness of your skin in stressful situations, like an interview or before giving a presentation.

Different Types Of Blushing:

Although we may experience blushing in normal interactions there are three main blushing types: love, embarrassment, and skin problems. Firstly, blushing because of love. Seeing a crush, getting a text, or after going on a date it all comes to the affection that the person you were with gives you increasing blood vessels because your heart is beating fast. Secondly, blushing out of embarrassment: embarrassment is a painful emotion, researchers believe that the purpose of embarrassment is to make people feel badly about their social or personal mistakes as a form of internal (or societal) feedback, so that they learn not to repeat the error. However, blushing might also be an indication of skin problems. Symptoms and possible causes of blushing: if you have redness on your face all the time, small blood vessels can be visible through your skin if you might have rosacea which needs to be checked by professionals. Another reason why you may experience blushing is that the blood vessels in your face widen, allowing more blood to flow through them.
