How would you define equestrian sports? Is it just riding a horse? Controlling it? Or is it something more? I think it is more. It is much more than just riding a horse.

Equestrian sports are not only about riding a horse. At first, it may look simple, like just sitting and guiding the horse. But actually, it is not like that. It is about the bond between the rider and the horse and how they move together. This bond does not form quickly. It needs time, practice, and patience. To build a bond with a horse, you must understand the horse and the horse must understand you.
Just like people, every horse has a different personality. Some horses do not like rain. Some horses feel calm only when the person they trust rides them. If someone else rides them, they may try to throw the person off or not let them ride at all. But some horses can be very friendly. In short, horses have different characters just like humans.

At first, equestrian sports look like any other sports. You train, you practice, and then you join competitions. But here the situation is a little different. Equestrian sports are the only sports in the world where two living beings do the sport together. It is also the only sport in the Olympics where two living beings compete together. Also, it is one of the few sports where men and women compete together. In most sports, people are separated by strength or physical features. But here, this difference is not very important.
The rider and the horse must move together. You cannot do something and expect the horse to understand it immediately. If there is no bond between you, it becomes hard to control. Sometimes even very small mistakes can change everything. Horses can feel the rider’s emotions. If you are nervous, the horse feels it too. If you are stressed, it reacts to it. That is why riders try to stay calm, but this is not always easy.

Also, equestrian sports are not about forcing the horse. Some people think it is only about control, but it is not true. It is more about understanding. Small movements are a way of communication. With time, you understand each other better, and it becomes more natural.
Trust is also very important in this sport. Without trust, things can easily go wrong. Especially when jumping or moving fast, you need to trust your horse. In the same way, the horse must trust you. Otherwise, one small mistake can affect both of you and make the situation dangerous.

Equestrian sports also need patience. You cannot learn everything in a short time. Building a strong bond with a horse takes time. Sometimes progress is slow, and things do not go as planned. But this is a natural part of the sport.
In conclusion, equestrian sports are not just about riding a horse. This sport is about balance, communication, and becoming one with the other. You must move not like two separate beings, but in one harmony. In equestrian sports, two living beings come together, but the result is never two. The result is always 1+1 = 1, and maybe this is the most important thing that makes it different from many other sports.
