WHY ARE SOME PEOPLE LEFT-HANDED?

Let's think about our daily habits: brushing our teeth, opening a door, writing a number… About ninety percent of the world's population use their right hands in these tasks. However ten percent of the world uses their left hand in their daily life. For centuries being left-handed was misunderstood and was linked to different things like being unlucky or strange. However, in reality being left-handed is not even connected with luck. Then why are our dominant hands different?

1.Brain Asymmetry

Human brain is divided into two parts called the right and left hemispheres and these hemispheres controls the opposite parts of the body. In people who are right-handed, the left hemisphere which controls logic and language is more dominant. In the other hand left-handed people it changes. Their right hemisphere has a much stronger part in controlling tasks.This shows that left-handed individuals process information different than right-handed ones because the right hemisphere is mainly tied to creativity like art, music and sports.

2.Genetics

Scientists' research shows that left-handedness can be seen in families. However it is not as simple as inheriting eye color or hair color. Research shows that there are up to 40 different areas in the DNA that plays a role in determining which hand we use more dominant.

It is important to know that even though genetics are important, it is not the all.

3.The Evolutionary Base

Evolutionary biologists believes that left-handedness comes from the relationship between cooperation and competition. When we look from the competition part we see that humans have been sharing tools and spaces that favors a single dominant hand for centuries. However, in competitive scenarios being left-handed is an advantage. For example, in ancient combat opponents who were used to fight right-handed fighters were caught off guard by unexpected attacks of left-handed fighters.

In conclusion, being left or right-handed is not just a preference, it is a sign of human diversity and the complex ways of how our brains develop. In a world designed mostly for right-handed people, being left-handed is a unique trait that we should embrace.
