Why do Americans Use Much Larger Engines than EU Does?

You may have realised that USA uses much bigger and heavier engines that produce less power, meanwhile EU using engines that are compact, smaller and producing much more power compared to the size. But, why and how? Let's find out!

History of a Car's Body

Europe has a history which is much longer and richer than USA. And back then; cars didn't exist, so they made the streets only for small horse carrieges and pedestrians. Meanwhile in USA, there isn't a problem like this because they don't have many historical places as Europe does. The streets are wider, there's much more land for construction ect. so they don't need to make small cars to fit trough narrow spaces like Europe does!

Prices

In America; people prefer gas powered cars rather than diesel, even though they need much more torque to move those heavy loaded trucks and big cars. In Europe, everything is right the opposite: People use much lighter and smaller cars but mostly diesel holds the crown, even though they don't need that much amount of useless torque power to move them! The main reason for this comes down to everything's source: Money. A diesel car is much more efficient because it doesn't use as much fuel as gas engines. Also in Europe, gas prices can blow your mind! Diesel is the way to go... In America, again, right the opposite! There is no fuel cheaper than gas in USA. So the manufacturers usually say "Screw it, why not?" and put hefty engines in sports cars and-heavy duty trucks.

Usage

USA is the land of power and heavy-duty, but also freedom. :) Another main reason of people using big engines for trucks is the usage of them. America doesn't mind how long the towing load is, they only check how long the truck itself is. That's why you don't see very large trucks anywhere else but America, or the American movies. But in Europe, things are different. The law requires to check the towing load and the truck in total, so the truck manufacturers in EU usually make the trucks way shorter than USA does to maximise the tow load lenght. Lastly, American trucks have bed bunkers behind the seat because they make much longer. The driver is also a human, let him get some sleep! They can't get to the deliver point in a single day if they're making journeys all across the country. In Europe, delivery journeys are shorter, no need to get sleep because they last 5 hours the longest.

Conclusion

In short, America’s love for space, speed, and low fuel costs shaped its big-engine culture, while Europe’s urban design and regulations promoted smaller, more economical engines. In Europe, laws are much stricter than USA so European car and truck manufacturers can't do whatever they want like American manufacturers does.
