The year 2024 is over. Can we say the new year is exciting? Even though the new year has just begun, people already started getting ready to celebrate upcoming events. According to a survey, 27% of American adults can’t help but build their Christmas trees at the beginning of November. These facts lead us to a certain question: Why do people celebrate?
No society has nothing to celebrate. Each of them finds a reason and a way to celebrate. Since the early times, people have found some so-called important events to have a celebration on. This could have been the bounty of the harvest, phrases of the moon, or even countless milestones in an individual’s life. Dance, decorate, dress up, sing songs tell stories, perform rituals... All of them have been done in the past and are still done currently for the concept of celebrating. The early celebration is a form of ‘creating happiness from small things’ since it is not the most necessary activity. In a world full of stress, it is fully understandable that people try and find their joy. Psychoanalyst Steve McKeown states that because stress and anxiety have captured each side of our day, people like to connect to things that make them happy. He also says New Year decorations bring people back to their magical childhood excitement. In addition, According to Psychologist Deborah Serani, Christmas creates a neurological shift that produces happiness as it takes us out of our daily routines. Serani adds that Christmas spikes dopamine, which is a feel-good hormone. Nothing in winter can top the joy of the new year. Nevertheless, the other seasons have a lot to give as well. To take a closer look: January has the new year; in February there is the winter holiday; spring begins in March; the 23rd of April is significant in April; on May, the 19th of May is celebrated; June, July, and August are summer months, stealing everyone’s hearths; September is the first month to not to have a special occasion, which can be celebrated; October holds the 29th of October which is the foundation of Turkish Republic; November is the first month to have a special day which is memorialized with sorrow with 10th of November, but it still has the Teacher’s Day since we, the humans, are dying to celebrate stuff; lastly December, which is recognized with all the new year stuff just like January. In conclusion, we can say that a few weeks in total of our lives gives us something to celebrate, to create our little happiness. So, why not celebrate?
